About This Cause
Help Build & Support A Community Health Center! There is a slow but persistent effort to establish a small but comprehensive, sustainable, and eco-driven health service in Bio-os, a small barrio in the town of Amlan, Negros Oriental, Philippines. Amlan is a sea-side community of 30,000 people, most under the age of 21, and suffering from many of the typical health problems in rural Philippines, including high maternal and infant mortality rates, nutritional deficiencies, dengue fever, tuberculosis, inadequate housing, dislocation due to typhoons and natural disasters, and lack of access to basic health services. The project is called the Community Health Development Center (CHDC), a replicable model with a holistic three (3) pronged approach to improve the health and well-being of the underserved communities through: a) The use of integrative traditional medicine and natural herbs for treatment and healing, b) Teaching the basic skills in health promotion and disease prevention, and c) Advocating environmental stewardship and sustainability. Conceptualized as an extension service for basic community health care, education, and training by St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD) in the Philippines and sponsored by the SPUD Alumni Association of North America (SPUDAA-NA), the CHDC Planning Team identified the following objectives: 1. Establish an integrative health facility that provides basic medical care, health promotion and education programs, herbal training and the use of medicinal plants from a pharma garden onsite. 2. Field training, research and health services opportunities for SPUD nursing students on integrative medicine related to building healthy and sustainable communities. 3. Promote partnerships and collaboration with medical health practitioners, health workers and stakeholders, and 4. Promote environmental advocacy and stewardship to the local and surrounding communities. CHDC Project Total Cost: $75,000 [$50,000 est. total center-related construction plus $25,000 est. total operating cost for the first two years] With support from SPUD Alumni and friends covering the initial cost of architectural design, basic construction, and back-fill of a portion of donated land, the self-contained CHDC will approximately have 144 square meters (or 1,500 square feet). The ground floor is concrete and surrounded by steel matting. It has standard rooms (reception-1, medical examinations-2, pantry/storage-1, restrooms-2) and an area for assessment and education activities. Included in planning and design are water tanks for rainwater collection and a fenced-in organic medicinal garden - both important for the Center's integrative and sustainable plans. Funds raised from this campaign will help support permanent staffing; meanwhile, the CHDC Team plans to open its doors to the community with a collaborative administrative partnership by SPUD's Nursing Department and its Community Extension Services Program, and with a schedule involving SPUD nursing students on rotation and alumni volunteers from the public and private health sectors. CHDC’s unique aspects are: a) the use of medicinal herbs for traditional and natural healing, and b) its environmental advocacy and stewardship for the community. With future partnerships and collaboration from the Local Government Units (LGU) and private and public health partners, an accessible and sustainable CHDC can be replicated to help improve the well-being of other communities in the Philippines. CAN YOU HELP US MEET OUR CAMPAIGN GOAL OF $75,000? The St. Paul University Alumni Association of North America (SPUDAA-NA), a non-profit 501c3 organization (www.spudaana.org) based in Chicago, is asking for your support of the CHDC Project on behalf of the St. Paul University Dumaguete and its Outreach Foundation, the community of Bio-os, Amlan, and of nearby communities with so minimal access to health care. They need our help to make this project a replicable model for community involvement and partnership, environmental stewardship, and sustainability. Donations and contributions thru SPUAA-NA are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law; channeled and earmarked 100% to donor-designated projects administered by the SPUD-Outreach Foundation. Urgent Action Needed! Help Complete Building A Health Center Already Serving Community Help Raise $12,400 by October 1 for Completion of Sustainable and Eco-Driven Clinic! Please Make Your Donation To SPUDAA-NA* The February 8th opening to celebrate the progress of the clinic building construction of the Community Health Development Center (CHDC) was significantly followed with a successful medical mission in Bio-os, Amlan in the Philippines. Hundreds of residents from the community arrived to support the clinic and to receive health assessments, medical consultations, and health education from volunteer nurses, doctors, and students. The CHDC project is a replicable health model with a holistic approach to improve the health and well-being of communities through, a) the use of integrative traditional medicine and natural herbs for treatment and healing; b) teaching the basic skills in health promotion and disease prevention, and c) advocating environmental stewardship and sustainability.
