Mission Statement
NEED is a collectively-run needle exchange program dedicated to reducing and preventing infectious diseases and other harm among the injection drug-using community. We offer free anonymous services in a client-centered manner. We view supporting and improving the overall health and well being of drug users as crucial public health work.
About This Cause
Berkeley NEED provides harm reduction services for people who use drugs 3x a week at (1) brick and mortar site, and (2) mobile sites in Berkeley, CA. At each site, harm reduction supplies, such as Narcan, new syringes, fentanyl test strips, condoms, sharps containers are given at zero cost to remove any barriers for clients participation. These sites also provide a safe space for individuals to dispose of any used needles, where NEED delivers them to needle disposal companies. NEED also provides outreach efforts 1x a weekat houseless tent encampments in and around Berkeley. Most recently, NEED was awarded funding from the California Harm Reduction Initiative (CHRI) providing funding for staffing outreach and case workers, allowing NEED to expand harm reduction into referral and navigation services for program participants at fixed site and outreach locations. This expansion of services is currently in development phases with implementation happening over the next few months.
