About This Cause

Voz is a worker-led organization that empowers diverse day laborers and immigrants to improve their working conditions and protect civil rights through leadership development, organizing, education and economic opportunity. We connect hundreds of day laborers to thousands of local employers, guaranteeing labor protections and offering workforce and leadership development trainings. We operate the MLK Jr. Worker Center. It offers a safe space for workers to build community, participate in trainings that increase employability, and organize themselves towards ending exploitation, discrimination and wage theft. Since 2000, Voz has been able to reclaim over $600,000 in stolen wages, created over 30,000 jobs, and set a $15 minimum wage. In 2016 alone, day laborers earned almost $400,000 in wages through jobs at the Center. We provide disenfranchised day laborers with leadership development opportunities as well as classes aimed at providing them with the skills they need to secure long-term employment. We have a strong history of community engagement as a worker-led organization fighting for immigrant and worker rights at the national, state, and local level. We are active in diverse coalitions including the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition, the Oregon Coalition to Stop Wage Theft, and Portland United Against Hate.
