Mission Statement

Founded in 2007, ZanaAfrica Foundation supports adolescent girls with the tools they need to safely navigate puberty and unlock their potential. These tools include sanitary pads and rights-based reproductive health education, delivered in the form of social and behavior change content (SBCC) through comics and magazines delivered to both girls and boys through schools and community organizations.

About This Cause

In Kenya, as in many parts of the world, puberty marks a time when girls’ worlds and opportunities begin to shrink while boys’ worlds and opportunities expand. Rather than adolescence being a time of hope and opportunity, it marks a time when girls’ worlds narrow, and gender inequalities begin to deepen. Adolescent girls risk life-changing violations of their human rights including early marriage, sexual and gender-based violence, and teen pregnancy. Such pressures are insurmountable for girls without knowledge of their bodies and rights. Compounding this challenge, 2 in 3 girls in Kenya cannot access sanitary pads. The inability to manage menstruation reliably, coupled with a lack of reproductive health education negatively impact girls’ health, confidence, and safety. Across East Africa and specifically Kenya, this reality is evidenced in the numbers. ZanaAfrica addresses these challenges For over a decade, ZanaAfrica has addressed these challenges and supported girls with the tools they need to safely navigate puberty and unlock their potential. Our suite of proven interventions - sanitary pads and 25-part reproductive health curriculum - are designed to address the challenges faced by youth across Kenya, and we are experts in designing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs around stigmatized issues such as reproductive and menstrual health and gender-based violence.
