Mission Statement
Penfold Theatre offers the north Austin metro area intimate stories that speak to its unique character, nurture local professional theatre, promote empathy, and inspire hope.
About This Cause
Penfold Theatre Company began in the summer of 2007. Our founders - Ryan Crowder, Nathan Jerkins and Sean Martin - undertook an exploratory 18-hour road trip across the central United States and brought home a vision for professional theatre in north Travis and Williamson counties. Soon after, the group assembled a National Advisory Board, consisting of prominent theatre leaders from across the country. With their help, Penfold underwent an extensive period of planning and development, from which it emerged in the spring of 2008. In its first eight seasons, Penfold produced twenty eight plays and musicals, which together garnered 101 local awards and honors, including B. Iden Payne and Austin Critics Table Awards in categories like Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role, Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Musical Production (two years in a row). At the same time, the company has been working with government, nonprofit and private partners to open a new performance venue in the in the city of Round Rock during the 2016-17 Season. Penfold also provides theatre education programs. Led by a team of experienced teaching artists, Penfold offers a series of summer camps for elementary and middle school students in partnership with other educational groups including Round Rock ISD, the City of Round Rock Parks & Recreation Department and Round Rock Christian Academy. -- We desire for our community a theatre of the highest artistic quality and professionalism, where residents and visitors can experience this moving art form at its best. With our fellow artists, we celebrate and affirm the best in Texas’ already rich and diverse artistic landscape. At the same time, we dedicate ourselves to Texas’ artistic growth, by connecting and nurturing local artists and by leading the way in creative daring and excellence. We defy the tradition that America’s best theatre begins in New York. We provide an opportunity for Texas’ best artists to stay here, have families, and practice the art they love for the communities they care about. We hope that the people who come through our doors are not only delighted, entertained, and refreshed, but that they also encounter something deeper. We believe that theatre reminds us that life’s possibilities are larger than the routine existence we experience day to day. Theatre is a place for the audience and performers to dream together, question together, seek together, and change together. We dream of a place that is accessible and relevant to everyone, regardless of ethnic, social, or economic status.
