Mission Statement
Strive for Change is an all-volunteer non-profit committed to identifying and providing grant monies to organizations the help the working poor in Alameda and Contra Costa counties achieve economic self-sufficiency.
About This Cause
Strive for Change's all-volunteer Board researches organizations that provide job training, career planning, and mentoring to the Working Poor. Once we identify an agency that appears to be effective, we meet with the organization's executive directors, program directors, and/or development directors, and ask the hard questions: how many people apply to your programs? How many are accepted? How many graduate, or finish the training? How many get jobs within 60 days? How many are employed 90 days after training? 180 days? What is your overhead? What are your sources of income? Do your alums come back? Do they give back? We are a relatively small organization, relying on donations solicited primarily from individuals. Our directors are committed to covering all overhead expenses, e.g., printing, postage, donor "thank you" events. Our annual giving budget has gone up over the ten years we've been in operation, with 2014 giving at $97,500, to agencies like The Bread Project (offers training in commercial baking), Cypress Mandela Training Center (construction), Opportunity Junction (office skills), The Stride Center (computers), Kitchen of Champions (cooking and general restaurant work), and Wardrobe for Opportunity (resume preparation, soft skills training, and interview-appropriate clothing).
