Mission Statement
At the heart of our Foundation are the values that Robert H. Lyon instilled in us — compassion, love, and generosity. We are pleased to reveal our latest initiative—Lyon’s Way—which will center these values to improve lives for disadvantaged youth afflicted with cancer. Through Lyon’s Way, the Lyon Family Foundation is partnering with the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital on the South Side of Chicago to realize an important vision for the hospital: hiring a full-time psychologist to support patients in their Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology Program. A cancer diagnosis can have a profound impact on both the short- and long-term mental health of a young person, leading to anxiety, depression, and other symptoms that exacerbate cancer’s physical impact. A dedicated, full-time psychologist will better meet the needs of AYA patients by helping families and patients navigate their way through treatment, and by devising individual plans that support the mental, physical and spiritual health of the patients and families throughout their experiences with Comer Children’s. It is our aim through Lyon’s Way that AYA patients, and their families, are given extra layers of armor as they persevere through one of life’s most difficult diagnoses. It is no coincidence that the family name Lyon historically means “fierce or brave warrior.” This is just the beginning. We are starting with a 3-year commitment, and over time, as our resources grow, we will build on the initiative to include many other high-touch, high-impact ways in which we can improve the cancer journey for youth.
About This Cause
Robert Lyon lost his battle with Leukemia in 2007 after fighting the disease for three long years. After his passing, the Lyon family created the Robert Lyon Leukemia Foundation in his honor in 2008. In 2017, the family merged the two foundations in order to function more efficiently as a charitable organization and help the greatest number of people. Each year, we dedicate 25% of our funds towards Leukemia research initiatives. The foundation continues to support key players in the research field as well as patient services to ensure that no one faces this illness alone or without adequate resources.
