Mission Statement
Knock Foundation is dedicated to creating opportunities for under-served populations in the developing world. By working closely with the affected communities, Knock develops comprehensive, self-sustaining and holistic practices designed to alleviate poverty and its attendant problems. Our work stems from an abiding belief that to reach one's full potential, every human being must have the opportunity to pursue an education, practice healthy living and exist in a clean environment. Knock partners with the communities served to develop and sustain these objectives, offering hope, friendship and a better tomorrow to as many people as possible.
About This Cause
Knock Foundation works in the developing world to help better the lives of those in need. We believe in providing the opportunities of education, health care, and a clean living environment to those who are unable to attain these basic human rights on their own. Consequently, our work falls under the following five categories: Children’s Centers, Self-Sustainable Projects, Seminars, Education, and Health Care. HIV/AIDS - Healthy Living Seminars: In conjunction with a local NGO, Knock developed the curriculum for these seminars in 2008. Since then, we have conducted one to two seminars per year in different villages in the rural Moshi area in Tanzania. Each seminar has had attendance of between 150 to 250 people, ranging from young children to adults. The seminars are taught by young Tanzanians in their late teens and early 20s who are experienced and expert in what they do. Topics addressed include self-esteem, planning goals, good relationships, drugs and alcohol, HIV/AIDS and the immune system, HIV/AIDS transmission, family planning, responsible parenting and abuse. These seminars have garnered much interest and positive feedback Lunch Programs: Government primary schools require families to pay an annual school fee, and although only about $35, many families cannot afford to pay. Consequently, children are denied schooling. The fee includes the cost of lunch for the entire year, which in many cases is the only meal a child may have in a day. Knock has been feeding lunch to the 400 students at Mrupanga Primary School (Grades K-7) each year since August 2008 and in 2011 added the 450 students at Longuo Primary School to our program. The lunch program grants incentives to parents to send their children to school so they can eat one nutritious meal each day. The byproducts of the program have been increased attendance at school and students more attentive during class. Scholarships: In partnership with several individuals and organizations, Knock is offering 35 educational scholarships in the year 2014. Five of these students are studying at a private English-medium primary school in Moshi and have all risen to the top of their classes. Many finished primary school in September 2012 and 2013, and will be attending secondary school in 2014. The others are in various secondary school or technical programs. Knock is so excited to be offering the opportunity of education to so many hard-working and deserving students. Tulivu Kindergarten: Tulivu is a school for children between the ages of four and seven years old in the city of Moshi. The school has between 35-50 students who are taught by one teacher alongside the headmistress, who owns the school with her husband. A small, one-room building serves as the only classroom, often forcing three students to share one desk. The supplies available for the children are limited to some paper, pencils, crayons and a few books, and the majority of these are materials that past volunteers have left behind. In September 2010, Jenny Galgano, a Cross-Cultural Solutions volunteer at the time, traveled to Tanzania to begin a program teaching English at Tulivu. Jenny’s parents and brother Brian arrived in Tanzania to meet her after her volunteer program ended. After learning more about Tulivu through their visit to the school, the Galgano Family has partnered with Knock Foundation to begin a project to bring much needed supplies and support to Tulivu Kindergarten Physician Missions to Africa & Central America: Knock Foundation, in conjunction with United Therapies and the Earth Institute at Columbia University, sponsors ongoing medical trips to Ghana, Swaziland, Kenya, Ethiopia and Nicaragua. These missions are in furtherance of the Earth Institute’s Millennium Cities Initiative, to help selected areas complete an urban transformation by halving extreme poverty and creating the conditions for sustainable economic development. Last year, working in Mekelle, Ethiopia a team of Urologists treated dozens of patients, while training local doctors in the latest in medical care. They treated a variety of problems including patients who had been impaled by an ox, urethral damage from a lightning strike, many open prostatectomies, cystoscopies and resections. In addition the team performed a life-saving, 7-hour surgery (longest in the hospital’s history) on a 3-year old boy who was born with his bladder protruding through his skin. A group of volunteers also traveled to Southern Ethiopia to work at an orphanage caring for 100 aids orphans. As in past medical missions, Knock donated and shipped a 40 foot container of medical equipment and supplies to area Hospitals. According to a hospital staff member, “Knock provided supplies that they hadn’t seen, but sorely needed, in over 3+ years”. To date, Knock has shipped over $600,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies to Africa. Upcoming Knock medical missions include: A return trip to Ethiopia with a team of Urologists and a team of Cervical Cancer Specialists. A return medical mission to Nicaragua in Central America.
