Mission Statement
Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center is a garden and nutrition education center providing hands-on classes for children, families, and adults. The Mission of Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center is to empower students and families from diverse backgrounds to be healthy and active citizens through organic gardening, environmental stewardship, and nutrition education. Our purpose is to build healthy families and a healthy environment. Located in National City, our beautiful 7-acre property provides a garden oasis in the midst of an urban environment.
About This Cause
Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center is one of the few garden-based nutrition programs in the Country that emphasizes science education and food preparation alongside garden cultivation. Our goal is to improve health and environmental stewardship by providing children, adults, and families in National City and San Diego County with the tools to make informed and healthy decisions in the kitchen, in the community, and for the environment. Our garden based nutrition education programs teach children and adults not just how to grow but also how to cook – and enjoy – tasty, healthy, whole foods. Our programs are designed to involve all members of the community including the children, parents, teachers, and new leaders: • Children’s Garden and Nutrition Education Program for elementary students • Cooking for Salud parent education series • Community and Family programs • Teacher Training Academies • Volunteer and Intern Program for high school and college students • Kitchenistas Community Engagement program • Adult Cooking and Gardening Classes Children and families explore connections between food and health. Students participate in hands-on gardening, science and nutrition, and cooking classes. Adults gain skills and confidence to prepare healthy meals. Families learn the importance of understanding what we eat. With a team of nine dedicated staff members and over 250 volunteers and interns each year, we deliver high quality programs that teach scientific literacy and environmental awareness, while encouraging visitors to explore the interrelationships between a quality diet, sustainable agriculture, and healthy living. These lessons empower children and families to make changes at home that will improve health and inspire them to educate others, including policy makers, on the importance of health in fostering a vibrant community.
