Mission Statement

The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights is a human rights organization that advocates for the rights of unaccompanied immigrant children.

About This Cause

Each year, thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children arrive at the borders of the United States. They are called “unaccompanied,” because they travel on their own, without any parent or guardian to guide or protect them. These children make difficult, often dangerous journeys to escape rampant violence, child labor, severe abuse and desperate poverty. They come from all corners of the world, including China, India, Ethiopia, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Each child is charged with breaking the law and placed in deportation proceedings. Stacking the odds even further against them, unaccompanied children must face off in immigration court against government attorneys who know the immigration laws inside and out. Immigrant children do not have the right to an attorney appointed at government expense. Therefore, unless they have the financial resources to hire their own attorney, or a pro bono attorney takes their case, immigrant children must appear in court alone and act as their own advocate. This means children, sometimes as young as 3 years old, often victims of trafficking or abuse, must make their own case to remain in the U.S. At present, U.S. law does not require judges or immigration officials to consider what’s best for the children who appear before them, even though their decisions can carry life-and-death consequences. And that’s where we come in. The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights advocates for the best interests—safety and well-being—of the most vulnerable unaccompanied children. We assign and supervise bilingual volunteer Child Advocates who learn each child’s story, why the child came to the U.S., and what, if anything, the child has to return to in home country. Equipped with this information, Child Advocates work alongside Young Center attorneys and social workers to make recommendations that champion the children’s best interests. We submit our recommendations, based on state and international law, to a range of government decision makers, including immigration judges, asylum officers and enforcement officials. We also conduct policy advocacy to incorporate the best interests of the child standard into immigration law and policy and are working with federal agencies to implement a best interests framework.
