Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
About This Cause
In 2005, Missy Hammerstrom was visiting an elementary school in Louisville, Ky., for a community project. She was eating lunch when a little girl asked for Missy’s apple. Missy asked the girl if she didn’t eat enough in the lunchroom. The girl said, “No, I’m taking it home so I can eat it this weekend.” Missy was heartbroken by the thought that kids in her community were going hungry. That night, she drove to the store and purchased every backpack she could find. She filled those backpacks with shelf-stable food and donated the backpacks to the school. At that moment, Blessings was born. Today our mission is just as simple as Missy’s act of kindness to those children in her community. Since its incorporation in 2008, Blessings has grown into the only national organization solely dedicated to preventing childhood hunger on weekends, with more than 1,270 programs in 45 U.S. states and Washington D.C. This past school year (2023-2024) alone, Blessings provided more than 3 million hunger-free weekends to kids facing hunger. Since 2008,Blessings has served 1 million children, providing 30 million hunger-free weekends. Since 2017, Charity Navigator has awarded Blessings with a four-star rating, the highest score possible, because of the organization’s financial health, accountability, and transparency. GuideStar recognizes Blessings as a Platinum-level rated nonprofit, the highest designation awarded.
