Mission Statement

The Apparent Project is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization birthed as an expression of love and concern for people who are in need. Our hearts are burdened for all people in need, but we are committed to lending a helping hand to the people of Haiti. Our mission focus is to “make the needs of Haiti known,” and to offer opportunity for Haitians to be able to provide for themselves and their families, empowering them to rise up out of poverty… to be able to keep their families together… and to avoid relinquishing their children to orphanages.

About This Cause

In Haiti, poverty and the legacy of slavery have caused a staggering culture of child abandonment and male neglect of family commitments. 70% of labor-aged Haitians are unemployed, while the employed earn an average annual wage of $400. In 2009, awareness of the need for income led to the birthing of Apparent Project’s artisan training. Through AP, Haitians were able to provide for their families. In 2014, the AP Institute was established, empowering artisans with broader employment skills. The AP Childcare was also established to provide a safe place for parents to leave infants and toddlers while at work. MISSION: OUR PURPOSE, VISION Haiti had up to 500,000 orphans before the devastating earthquake of 2010. The vast majority of these "orphans" were actually children given up by living parents because of extreme poverty. We believe the best way to prevent child abandonment is by economically empowering Haitians. AP provides employment opportunities for impoverished parents through our artisan program. VALUES: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO Mothers give up their children, and men leave their families because of the stress of trying to provide from within a devastated economy. Whatever the forces are that have made fracture and dislocation the norm for Haitian families, it is poverty that maintains this status quo. We are committed to help find ways to empower our Haitian friends so they can rise above the status quo. WHAT WE DO: OUR CURRENT PROGRAMS Providing opportunities for employment and help with distribution and sales of items produced; training in basic jobs skills; providing a safe environment for children at risk. These are some of the ways AP helps facilitate the process of empowerment. Artisan Guild: Workers are trained to use discarded materials such as cereal boxes and oil drums to create beautiful items to sell. These items are sent to the US, where the items are sold through parties and fundraisers, thus providing the artisans with steady employment and a living wage. Apparent Project Institute: Interested workers can increase opportunities for employment by learning English and computer skills. These opportunities are rare in this country. AP Infant & Toddler Childcare: The day care helps give artisans the ability to keep their families together by providing a safe place for their infants and toddlers while they work. Nannies have been trained in CPR and other skills. These “at-risk” children have their first opportunity to begin learning things many of us take for granted. Our hope is that these children not only receive the care & nurture needed while in the Childcare, but also that they receive education as they grow up. With parents who are employed… the children have the opportunity.
