Mission Statement

Critical Exposure's mission is to train DC youth to harness the power of photography and their own voices to fight for educational equity and social justice.

About This Cause

Since 2004, Critical Exposure has provided experiential leadership and learning opportunities to more than 2,600 youth of color in DC. Today, our goals remain consistent with our initial vision: (1) teach youth of color to be change agents by building their skills, knowledge, and confidence in youth organizing and photography; (2) develop the capacities of youth of color to shape narratives about them; and (3) drive concrete changes in school environments by supporting youth-led campaigns that work towards education equity and close the opportunity gap. CE’s model of using photography as a way to teach civic engagement and develop leadership skills is unique. By teaching youth how to harness the power of photography and run their own campaigns while giving them decision-making power, we distinguish ourselves from other arts education and youth development organizations, as well as organizations that simply enlist youth to carry out campaigns that adults have designed. Not only do we apply the value of youth voice to our programmatic structure, we also apply them to our organizational structure. CE is dedicated to providing opportunities for youth leadership and decision-making at all levels of our organization.
