Mission Statement

To provide support to the academic program of the Humanities Magnet of Alexander Hamilton Senior High School, a Los Angeles Unified School District public high school.

About This Cause

The Friends of Humanities was established in 1994 to support through various resources the Alexander Hamilton Humanities Magnet. The Alexander Hamilton Humanities Magnet’s 380 students are part of the Alexander Hamilton High School’s 3000 student population. The Hamilton Complex is made up of six Small Learning Communities (SLC’s): The Humanities Magnet, The Music Academy Magnet, The Communication Arts Academy, the Math Science and Medicine School and the Business and Interactive Technology School. Though most magnet students take classes in the Humanities classes, they are free to take courses offered in the other SLC’s. All student activities offered in the Hamilton Complex are available to the Humanities’ students. At present the Humanities’ ethnic make-up is approximately: 20% African American, 33% Hispanic, 5.6% Asian and 40% White. Approximately 42% are Gifted. 41% of our students are on the school lunch program and 38 speak a language other than English at home. Since its inception in 1981, the Humanities Magnet has offered and interdisciplinary liberal arts curriculum emphasizing activities designed to strengthen a student’s cultural literacy, critical thinking skills and his ability to articulate (both verbally and in writing) complex ideas. Through exposure to the world’s creative minds from ancient times to the present, students acquire a thorough understanding of the intellectual history of mankind. As a small community, we are able to focus on the individual needs of our students. With the focus of our curriculum on that which is ‘human’ in all people, we encourage an open and positive acceptance of the differences between our members and an appreciation for our shared feelings and concerns. The values discovered in studying the humanities are constantly applied to our students’ experiences with each other. As a college preparatory program, we have high expectations for our students. Magnet core classes are taught on the Honors or Advanced Placement level. Our teachers apply the Gifted Rubric for Differentiated Instruction to all of these classes. Students are expected to participate in class discussions and to keep up a heavy reading load. Our program guarantees the completion of all the A through G requirements established by the UC system. State standards are incorporated and expanded upon in all classes. Annually, an average of 99% of our students goes on to higher education-84% last year were accepted to four year institutions.
