Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower young people through meaningful service learning opportunities in education, healthcare, and technology. We do this through strategic partnerships and learning models to utilize existing youth habits and uphold societal values in the communities we work.

About This Cause

YESLiberia serves the next generation of Liberian leaders by paying their tuition and fees, fostering service learning opportunities, delivering leadership training, and encouraging volunteerism. We are committed to helping students with academic potential who cannot afford their education. Since 2008, the organization has paid tuition for over 7,600 students, hosted several student leadership training workshops, and impacted various communities across Liberia. YESLiberia was 100 percent volunteer-run for the first decade of its existence. Led by YESLiberia’s founder, Z. J. Jallah and 19 board members, over 90 multinational volunteers invested time, talents, and treasures for the benefit of hundreds of students YESLiberia serves. For donors seeking a Liberian-led NGO that is trustworthy, effective, and fiscally responsible, YesLiberia is your ideal option. HOW WE WERE FOUNDED Conviction created YESLiberia. Daily the needs of underprivileged are ignored. We ignore their struggles because it’s easier to deal with the more important things in our lives— like climbing the corporate ladder and saving money so we don’t become indigent. And some of us ignore their challenges because they bring back unpleasant memories we seek to repress. But disregarding the plight of the underprivileged yields no resolution. Then certain things happen to remind us their struggles exist no matter how hard we try to pretend our needs surpass theirs. Jallah was convicted by several of those things over a short period of time. He remembered his underprivileged past—a past where he was seen as less than elite based on his tribal and economic status and where his education came as a gift from the United Methodist Church. Reminded, he became convicted to act and YesLiberia was founded to educate and help underprivileged Liberians whose plight he intimately understood. Several credible organizations have proven these challenges. According to a World Health Organization research conducted in 2009, six out of every 10 Liberians are illiterates. This is due to a fourteen-year civil war that disenfranchised Liberians and prevented them from getting the proper education that would enable them to compete with their peers around the world. During these years, and a good chunk after, school-going-age children were deprived their fundamental right to education. Imagine a child’s life without schooling for over a decade. While this might seem unimaginable to many, it was and is still a reality for children and teens in Liberia, including our founder. Those children, turned adults, are now navigating an education sector hampered by inadequate schools and supplies and lacked qualified teachers. To add to their challenges, in many African countries, students pay for their own tuition from elementary school through high school. Can you imagine that? That's why YesLiberia partnered with the YMCA of Liberia to provide tuition assistance to students with the direst needs. Through this partnership, we support students in five communities. And this is possible because people like you care. Our Tuition Assistance program, TAP, helps needy children in poverty-stricken communities develop their capacity for intellectual engagement. It is also a way for YESLiberia to make a deposit on an investment that gives a deserving child the chance to cultivate the bright future he/she richly deserves.
