AMERICAN BOOKBINDERS MUSEUM

San Francisco, California, 94103 United States

Mission Statement

The mission of the American Bookbinders Museum is to tell the story of how books are made and why they are important to all of us today. We do this by providing hands-on experiences for scholars, makers, and passionate book lovers, which furthers public understanding of the art and science of bookbinding.

About This Cause

The American Bookbinders Museum is a museum that examines the history of the book as a structure, from its earliest days to its modern day evolution. We provide docent-led tours which delve into the history of the book and the people who made them; our collection allows us to focus in particular on the changes wrought in books and binderies by the Industrial Revolution. We exhibit working Victorian-era binding machinery, as well equipment used for related work. Our goal is to help visitors see that common object, the book, in a new way.
