UPPER DELAWARE GLBT CENTER INC

MILFORD, Pennsylvania, 18337-2295 United States

Mission Statement

Incorporated in 2008, the Center was created in response to a need for services for the growing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community in the Northeastern PA region. Today, the UDGLBT offers a host of services and programs for the GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) community, their allies and the community at large. The uniqueness of our agency and the success of our programming attracts those living in Pike County as well as residents of Monroe and Wayne counties in PA, Sussex County, NJ and Orange/Sullivan Counties in NY. The mission of the UDGLBT is to provide a space and programs that welcome, support, empower, and most importantly, respond to the needs of the GLBT living in and visiting the Upper Delaware region. Through education, we aim to promote acceptance of GLBT individuals; raise awareness and increase knowledge to improve health status and to be an advocate for social change that embraces diversity and eliminates oppression based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

About This Cause

In 2012, we opened the first GLBT physical center in Northeastern PA - one of only three at the time in PA. Having a Center has enabled us to expand our much needed programs for GLBT adults and youth, allies and the community at large. Most significant among these programs is "People Promoting Pride," more commonly known as P3, our GLBT youth group. P3 gives our youth and their allies a place to find support and feel a sense of belonging. Our motto for the group is "Making It Better NOW," as telling them it gets better is too distant a concept for a young person in crisis or need. At the biweekly P3 Youth Discussion Group, they experience acceptance regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation or expression of gender. Through “P3 Voices,” there is also the opportunity to express and further understand their feelings and those of others through the biweekly socio-drama sessions. A socio-drama is a dramatic play in which several individuals act out assigned roles for the purpose of studying and remedying problems they are experiencing in living their truth in their everyday lives. On a weekly basis, we offer “P3 expressions,” an innovative program where youth can freely express and release emotions through art, that could otherwise prove to be harmful. On July 23rd we began P3 Visions”, a young adult discussion group for ages 18 to 22. We also offer social events for youth such as our yearly prom which includes GLBT and Ally Adults. The prom offers an enchanted evening which provides special opportunities for cross generational interaction. Our young members see, meet, and talk with GLBT role models and get a glimpse of what their own future can be like. Our adults are happy to be able to provide the encouragement and support they often lacked - but greatly needed - at their age. We have adult programs and events such as our educational initiative, iCARE (increasing Community Awareness thru Relevant Education). This initiative has heightened awareness and helped parents and members of the community gain a better understanding of GLBT people and the unique issues they face. Other iCARE workshops have been used to educate school personnel and human service providers. New programs being implemented include an HIV Support Group, “Coffee Talk”, an adult drop-in, a transgender support group and a parents support group.
