Mission Statement

A 2016 and 2013 CMA/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award Winner, Kyo-Shin-An Arts is a contemporary music organization with a mission to commission, present and promote chamber and orchestral music that integrates Japanese instruments, specifically shakuhachi, koto, and shamisen into Western classical music.

About This Cause

Now in its 12th Season, all of Kyo-Shin-An Arts' projects occupy a singular niche, inspiring esteemed Western composers and ensembles to explore the beauty of Japanese traditional instruments and integrating virtuoso, contemporary performers into the Western Classical music world. It introduces these composers and players to new musical concepts that inform individual artistic growth and is building a body of repertoire for future generations of artists and audiences. In December 2015, KSA's Artistic Director, James Nyoraku Schlefer, was recognized by Musical America Worldwide as one of its annual "30 Top Professionals and Key Influencers". Conceived in 2008, and incorporated in 2009, KSA works in partnership with established ensembles and Western soloists to present and perform its unique and eclectic repertoire. Operations are international, with ensemble partners and individual artists in the US, Europe and Japan. KSA presents an annual, five-concert series at the Tenri Cultural Institute in NYC. It is the face of KSA’s consistent presence in NYC and provides significant opportunities for performers and composers to be seen and heard in one of the city’s better chamber music venues. KSA has also collaborated locally to co-present its repertoire with Arts Brookfield, Cutting Edge Concerts, Phoenix Concerts and BargeMusic. Chamber music has been featured in residences at Duke University (Duke Performances), University of Hawai’i Manoa (Honolulu Chamber Music Series), and the University of St. Louis (Touhill Performing Arts Center). KSA has also commissioned, premiered and recorded orchestral works with koto and shakuhachi by Daron Hagen, James Matheson, Paul Moravec and James Nyoraku Schlefer, with a critical acclaimed CD on MSR Classics. Ensemble partners past and present include the Arianna, Cassatt, Ciompi and Voxare String Quartets, Classical Jam, Ensemble Epomeo, Neave Trio, Sybarite 5, Orchestra of the Swan, Round Top Festival Institute, and River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, among others. NYC-based players of Japanese instruments include James Nyoraku Schlefer, shakuhachi; Yoko Reikano Kimura and Sumie Kaneko, koto and shamisen; Yumi Kurosawa, 21-string koto. Kyo-Shin-An Arts has commissioned 33 composers with over 60 works among them. Commissioned composers have included Victoria Bond, Chad Cannon, Ciara Cornelius, Douglas J. Cuomo, Salina Fisher, Masatora Goya, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Daron Hagen, Matthew Harris, William Healy, Debra Kaye, Takuma Itoh, Kento Iwasaki, Mari Kimura, John King, Angel Lam, Daniel Levitan, Gilda Lyons, James Matheson, Paul Moravec, Mark Nowakowski, Thomas Osborne, Charles Porter, Yoko Sato, Somei Satoh, James Nyoraku Schlefer, Matthew Shorten, Benjamin Verdery, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Donald Womack, and Randall Woolf.
