Mission Statement

General Mischief Dance Theatre is to dedicated to reinforcing the power that joy and laughter have in communicating ideas. We create dance adventures that are playful, accessible, and often interactive. We are serious about fun.

About This Cause

In addition to maintaining a playful approach, we strive to to combine high-level storytelling with high-quality movement, to remind audiences that dance is as much visceral as it is visual. We strive to encourage the natural human desire to express oneself through movement. We create and present theatrical dance works which engage audiences emotionally, socially, and physically - often presenting theatrical dance in concert with social dance events. General Mischief Dance Theatre was founded informally in 2004 as an artistic collaboration between performer/choreographer Emily Smyth Vartanian, rigger/lighting designer Mark Baker and sound designer/choreographic advisor Adam Vartanian. The company was formally incorporated in 2008 in the interest of actively producing original dance pieces that engage and inspire audiences of all ages and levels of dance knowledge. The company has presented choreography, often in combination with social dance events, at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, The Connelly Theater, City Center Studios, The Zipper Theater, Medicine Show Theater, Ripley-Grier Studios, Dance Manhattan, You Should be Dancing, and Theater for the New City.
