Mission Statement

RCP is a grassroots organization based in Carrboro, NC. We are comprised of 950+ refugee and migrant residents, hailing from Burma, Syria, the Congo, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico. We are made up of 10 primary language cultures, and 18 distinct dialects, representing niche cultural and language communities from all over the world. Centering transformative relationships of mutual aid and collective care, RCP works at the intersection of social mobility, health equity, and language justice. We use community-led design to disrupt threats to the health and safety of refugee and migrant communities, and create systems that connect people to the resources they need while mobilizing institutions to eliminate barriers to access. We envision a world where health and well-being are not defined by citizenship status, native language, or racial identity. Where migration is seen as courageous, and is met with supportive community, safety and healing necessary to rebuild home. We are working to build a broad base of refugee and migrant youth who are equipped with the leadership skills and know-how for examining, challenging, and transforming the system-level practices and policies that push refugee and migrant communities into the shadows. We focus on language justice as the collective muscle for resisting forced assimilation while preserving endangered languages and cultural traditions, and forging young activists to advance the language justice movement, long term.

About This Cause

Language Justice: Individuals and communities have fundamental rights to language, culture, self expression, and equal participation. We challenge the English dominance and Euro-centric definitions of knowledge and leadership by investing time and resources in leadership development of Members, so that they can represent their community’s own priorities. And we alter institutions to provide space for full democratic participation. We are creating a community-owned model of language access, that shifts control over language services into the hands of language-marginalized communities. Relationship-based Accompaniment and Collective Care: It's all about relationships. We believe in the enduring power of mutual aid, and build on the social and emotional support that exists within and across refugee and migrant communities. We create and sustain transformative relationships, where both parties take care of one another. In addition to being wonderfully reciprocal, these relationships are grounded in a critical awareness of structures and legacies of power and oppression. Democratizing Information: The inability to communicate in one’s language of proficiency severely limits self-agency, increases isolation, and prevents public information from reaching non-English speaking communities. We work to level the playing field for non-English speakers by opening the door to public knowledge and idea exchange, establishing language autonomy, and building a body of data to evaluate practices within institutions.
