Mission Statement

Peace in Schools, a program of One House of Peace, offers mindfulness programs that help young people develop compassion, calm, emotional resilience, and self-awareness. At a time when school violence is widespread and many teens struggle with feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety, we offer a positive alternative. Our programs use mindfulness to alleviate personal and social strife in real-world settings. The self-supportive practices we teach are tools for life. We believe mindfulness leads to safer schools and a more peaceful world.

About This Cause

Peace in Schools, a program of One House of Peace, brings mindfulness to young people in schools, shelters, and social service agencies. Our programs support the emotional, physical and mental health of teens. Peace in Schools has established the first for-credit mindfulness course in a U.S. public high school, launched in September 2014. We also bring this program to at-risk teens in alternative schools. Our programs alleviate the personal and social turmoil experienced by many teens. They help build a calm, peaceful and supportive school environment. Peace in Schools demonstrates how mindfulness can be brought into mainstream education. We are charting a path for schools to support the emotional and mental health of teens. We provide positive alternatives to teens who, far too often, turn to self destructive behaviors to cope with feelings of isolation, depression and anxiety. Across all socioeconomic levels, rates of substance abuse, bullying, eating disorders and suicide remain alarmingly high. Our mindfulness programs help young people disengage from self-critical and reactive thoughts – thoughts that leave them vulnerable to outside forces, including intense social and academic pressure. Through Peace in Schools, teens learn how to experience and accept who they authentically are. In addition to our work in public schools, we partner with social service agencies and alternative schools to serve at risk youth. Our mindfulness programs support homeless teens, undocumented refugees, and at-risk youth who struggle academically and socially. These teens face extreme stress and many struggle with depression and self-destructive behaviors. We help them build positive relationships, increase resilience and practice self-care.
