Mission Statement
The Lakewood Police Independent Guild Charitable Fund was established by Lakewood Police Officers to help raise money and gather donated gifts for the needy citizens that they serve daily. Police Officers, business leaders, and other community members donate their time to help these families/individuals when they need it most. In the end, we wish to establish a better relationship between Lakewood Police Officers and the community we serve while helping them at the same time.
About This Cause
The Lakewood Police Independent Guild “Make a Difference” Fund was named in memory of Officer Ronnie Owens. After Owens’ tragic passing, his sister found a yellow legal pad in a drawer in his home. On the pad, Owens had written, “Make a Difference”. This exemplifies Owens’ desire to serve his community. The LPIG “Make a Difference” Fund is an all volunteer, non-profit charitable organization comprised of Lakewood Police Officers and members of the Lakewood community. These volunteers are on the front line of protecting our community every day and often come in contact with vulnerable victims who need “OUR” help. It may be a family who just lost everything they owned in a house fire or a young child who was molested and their family needs help and support. It may also be a domestic violence victim who needs a safe place to stay for a couple of days in order to flee an abusive relationship. Regardless of the situation, the goal of the “Make a Difference” Fund is to help the less fortunate in our community when the time arises. In addition to these on-going endeavors, the Lakewood Police Independent Guild “Make a Difference” Fund sponsors the annual Christmas at the Police Station. This is a free event held every year at the Lakewood Police Station that invites children from throughout Lakewood to come and visit with Santa Claus, have their picture taken, and receive a free toy or gift and warm clothing. We particularly focus on inviting children in less than ideal situations for whom this may be their only Christmas gift. Our primary fundraising event is the annual “Helmets Vs. Shields” Basketball Game. This is a charity game featuring basketball teams comprised of Lakewood Police Officers and Firefighters, respectively, who play a game of basketball. Monies raised from ticket sales, concessions, and the sale of raffle tickets are then divided between our charity and the Lakewood Fire Life Safety Charity Fund. We also accept private donations to our charity as well. The Lakewood Police Independent Guild Make a Difference Fund has done all of these things for people in “OUR” community but, we can’t continue to do this without your support. With a generous donation you can help us by providing funds in the form of gift cards, grants or by donating merchandise. This will allow us to continue to help many of these families and individuals not only to meet essential daily needs, but to work toward a brighter future. Again, the Lakewood Police Independent Guild “Make a Difference” Fund is an all volunteer organization. It is a non-profit charity registered with the Washington Secretary of State’s office. By utilizing volunteers and generous gifts from the community, we are able to keep our administrative costs low. Last year, our first year of operations, over 99% of the monies raised went directly to our charitable expenditures. Please help us make OUR community a better place!
