About This Cause
Rock Recovery is a non-profit organization with a simply stated, but daunting mission: To support the journey to freedom from disordered eating through individual recovery and community empowerment programs. The crude mortality rate for anorexia, bulimia, and other eating disorders is greater than 13% and in the United States alone, an estimated 20 million women and 10 million men will battle a clinically significant eating disorder at some point in their lifetime. Many of these disorders start to develop early in childhood, yet behaviors and warning signs are not recognized or addressed. People suffering from eating disorders often feel isolated, ashamed and alone. Many are unable to afford or locate treatment that allows them to maintain or effectively transition back into daily life. Treatment options are limited and costly, and insurance companies rarely cover the critical care necessary to overcome these disorders. Rock Recovery bridges the gap in existing treatment with a subsidized individual recovery program and collaborates and partners with existing treatment programs, mental health professionals and nonprofit organizations to carry out its mission. In addition to recovery care, Rock Recovery maintains an active presence in the community offering a community empowerment program, which includes speaking at universities and organizations, hosting wellness and body image workshops, educating local schools and organizing and participating in community events to increase awareness and prevention of eating disorders and connect people to resources. In 2007 Rock Recovery’s founder, Dr. Carylynn Kemp Larson, was battling disordered eating. Facing relapse, she did not qualify for intensive outpatient treatment or residential programs because she was not "sick enough.” She eventually was admitted to a residential program, but upon completing the program, she experienced a common struggle: Dr. Larson found that the transition back to daily life was an abrupt one, full of risk for relapse. She sought help to re-build her knowledge of healthy eating, nutrition, self-esteem, and psychological and physical well-being. During this struggle she recognized the lack of affordable resources available to bridge the gap between inpatient and outpatient care. In 2009, along with 12 passionate women, Dr. Larson founded Rock Recovery to fill this gap in caring for those struggling with disordered eating. Rock Recovery bridges full-time treatment centers with outpatient services for both immediate changes and long-term impact. Rock Recovery launched its individual recovery program in 2010, and now operates at full capacity with a substantial waiting list. Rock Recovery’s success is made possible through volunteers and in-kind support to bring heavily-subsidized treatment during non-work hours. The best proof of the organization’s impact is client testimonials, two of which are shared below: “I still can't believe how amazing my life is now... Rock Recovery was definitely the first step in my journey. The education series forced me to get real about how serious my struggle with disordered eating was.” – Lynn, former client “I had just moved to the D.C. area and was working long hours at two jobs. The stress of moving to a new place and an exhausting work schedule dismantled the fragile recovery I had achieved, resulting in a relapse and the return of old eating disorder behaviors. I had no support system and didn’t know where to turn, leaving me feeling alone and desperate. I knew I needed help, but did not have the financial or time resources to go to a treatment center or pay for expensive therapy. The frustrating truth is that affordable treatment options simply do not exist, particularly for people who must continue to work and earn a living. I searched the web for affordable therapy and support groups in the area. Luckily, I found Rock Recovery and their programs provided the help and support I so badly needed. Now, I am back on the road to a full recovery.” – Shawna, former client
