Mission Statement
The Buck Scholars Association was established to foster the personal and professional growth of the nearly 280 Frank H. Buck Scholars and expand educational opportunities for the next generation of promising and talented Northern California high school students.
About This Cause
The Buck Scholars Association (BSA) is an independent non-profit organization that was established in 2008 by the scholarship recipients of the Frank H. and Eva B. Buck Foundation (Buck Scholars). The BSA’s mission is twofold: (1) foster the personal and professional growth of the nearly 300 Buck Scholars now spread across the globe; and (2) expand educational opportunities for a new generation of extraordinarily promising and talented Northern California youth. At the heart of BSA’s work is the Buck Fellows Program -- a mentoring and scholarship program to support low-income high school students who demonstrate high academic and leadership potential, but could use further resources, support, and guidance to fully realize that potential. Fellows are chosen in their sophomore year of high school through a competitive selection process. Over 37 Fellows have been selected so far, with a new class added each year. Through the Buck Fellows Program, the Buck Scholars Association strives to make opportunity real for the next generation of promising Northern California youth. Buck Fellows are juniors and seniors in Northern California high schools who have demonstrated strong academic potential (with all ranking near the top of their high school classes academically), extraordinary leadership and personal initiative, a commitment to helping others succeed, and personal resiliency. Buck Fellows are paired with mentors within the existing Buck Scholar network who are exemplars in their respective academic and professional fields. Mentors provide Fellows with individualized expert guidance on academic and leadership development and the college application process. The BSA also provides each Fellow with a generous stipend for academic enrichment and leadership development programs for their final two years of high school. Fellows come from financially modest backgrounds and generally do not have parents who graduated from college. They are carefully selected for their determination to go as far as they can with the opportunities available to them. By helping cultivate their academic and leadership interests and ensuring they have the guidance and resources necessary to be competitive college applicants, the Buck Fellows Program helps open doors for them and ensure they fully realize their tremendous potential. Buck Foundation, a private, independent foundation established in 1990 to enlarge the educational opportunities of exceptionally gifted and talented northern California youth who also demonstrated “strength of character, enterprise, and personal initiative.” Over a period of two decades, the Buck Foundation awarded full-tuition scholarships to 282 individuals, enabling them to become leaders in the medical, legal, business, and educational communities. Past recipients of the Buck Scholarship have included a television anchor for Bloomberg, a New York Times best-selling author, a candidate for Congress in the 2012 elections, and a UCSF professor of medicine.
