Mission Statement
The mission of Clean the World is two-fold: 1) Recycle soap and hygiene products discarded by the hospitality industry to reduce environmental waste; and 2) Distribute recycled soap products to prevent hygiene-related diseases, reduce childhood morbidity rates, and encourage child development.
About This Cause
Did you ever wonder what happens to the little bar of soap you use once or twice when you stay at a hotel? Usually it gets thrown away and ends up in a landfill. This may not seem significant until you consider that more than 4.5 million hotel rooms in the United States discard an estimated 1.5 million bars of soap every single day. You may also be surprised to learn that every day nearly 6,000 children around the world will die from hygiene-related diseases. That’s nearly one-third of all child deaths. Hand washing with soap is the single most effective way to prevent those deaths. In fact, soap is more effective than vaccines, medications, or clean water initiatives alone. Hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved each year if people had soap and understood how to properly wash their hands. Clean the World is working at the intersection of both of these issues to reduce waste and save lives, one bar of soap at a time. We collect partially-used and discarded soap from thousands of hotels across America, recycling it into millions of new bars, and then we distribute the new soap to people who lack access to it around the world. In just five years, Clean the World has become the largest recycler of bar soap and bottled amenities in the world. Over 4,000 hotel partners are enrolled in our soap recycling program. We collect, recycle and distribute soap products over a geographic service area that encompasses the United States, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, 10 Canadian Provinces, and 99 countries worldwide. Through these efforts we have diverted 3,000 tons of soap waste from reaching landfills, placed 25 million soap bars back into human use worldwide, and distributed nearly 1 million hygiene kits throughout the United States. We are saving the planet and saving lives! With each recycled item, needy children are given the power to combat deadly diseases with the simplest of weapons – a bar of soap. In the process, hundreds of tons of needless waste are kept out of our nation’s landfills.
