Mission Statement

High Fives Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in Truckee, CA, whose mission is to focus on preventing life-changing injuries and provide resources and hope if they happen. All of the individuals that High Fives serves have survived a life-changing injury (i.e., one that impacts daily life, such as a spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI), amputation, or other mobility-limiting injuries). Formed in 2009 as a way to pay it forward by the founder in gratitude for the support he received during his own recovery from a serious skiing accident, the foundation has improved the quality of life and independence of 759 individuals and veterans from 47 states and territories and Canada since its inception in 2009. Please visit highfivesfoundation.org for more information.

About This Cause

High Fives Foundation's approach encompasses a past, present, and future impact, creating a universal shift in adventure sports that expands what is possible for those who have faced life-changing injuries. The Past is the Empowerment Fund | The Empowerment Fund provides financial support and equipment to life-changing injury survivors in the form of board-approved grants for adaptive sports equipment, the High Fives healing network, medical equipment, programs, living expenses, and emergency care/injury expenses. Since 2009, the foundation has disbursed $10 million in Empowerment funding to 759 traumatic injury survivors in 47 states and territories plus Canada, with $2 million disbursed in 2023 alone. In these 15 years, we’ve provided 221 adaptive bikes, 100 full sets of skiing equipment, and 37 surf/kiteboards to High Fives athletes across North America, enabling survivors to rediscover their identity. Johnson Healing Center | Located at 10775 Pioneer Trail, Suite #108 in Truckee, CA, the C.R. Johnson Healing Center is a 10,000 square foot wellness facility where recovery and rehabilitation take place for injured individuals through alternative healing therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, neurokinetic Pilates, restorative stretching, personal training, physical therapy, cold plunging, and infrared sauna. We’ve had well over 47,000 visits to the CRJ Healing Center since its establishment in 2010, and we typically hold more than 1,000 personal training sessions for High Fives athletes each year. The Future is the B.A.S.I.C.S. (Being Aware and Safe In Critical Situations) Program | This National Ski Areas Association (NSAA)-approved program is a service of the High Fives Foundation designed to engage young athletes to promote smart decision-making in the mountains. In the form of short, PSA-style videos, the free online series is available to everyone from school-aged children to industry professionals. B.A.S.I.C.S. features short films entitled '#HelmetsAreCool', 'Chairlift Safety', 'Navigating the Mountain as an Adaptive Skier', 'Gear Maintenance', and '#RideAnotherDay'. Since its creation in 2010, this program has been viewed, either in-person or online, more than 780,000 times. B.A.S.I.C.S. is available here: https://highfivesfoundation.org/programs/basics/
