Mission Statement
We are a non-profit organization, 501(c)(3), that has provided structure, and results-driven after-school and summer programs for nearly 25 years in the Fairhope community. Our mission: Empowering youth to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. What began in 1992 as a modest after-school effort affiliated with the Boys and Girls' Club of America has gown to a community-driven and supported comprehensive program to close both the academic and opportunity gap for all children in our area, grades Pre-K -12. 95% of our students do come from families that are financially challenged.
About This Cause
We provide a safe environment for students Monday through Friday throughout the school year. At 3 o'clock, more than 4,500 students hit the door of Fairhope schools. For many, what's next isn't sports practice, band or a service club. They're heading home or elsewhere...alone. That's why we're here. Our staff of fifteen is joined by 20+ volunteers Monday-Friday from 3-6:00pm. Students ride our RYC bus from school to our campus for an hour of play and outdoor time, followed by a "Power Hour" of homework tutoring from 3:30-4:30pm. Each grade level has a dedicated staff member with 2-3 volunteers including retirees and local high school students working children through reading and math or other assignments. Each day of the week then offers various enrichment including art, music, Odyssey, 4-H program, financial education, swimming, sailing, or working in our backyard garden with volunteer Master Gardeners. Our commitment to measurable results includes a major celebration of those making A/B honor roll each quarter - a number that continues to grow. The RYC Summer Enrichment Academy builds on that focus toward academic confidence. The month of June includes field trips and summer fun, followed by a true Academy in July with certified teachers leading students in hour rotations of math, reading and science, K-12. Our commitment is 15% improvement across all grade levels - and we consistently meet that goal. Monies provided to us through private donations, grants, and other contributors, help to fund our activities, snacks, lunches throughout the summer, field trips, and most importantly the certified teachers who give their time for the entire month of July. There are buses that need to maintained, not to mention gassed to pick up our students. Our staff members need to be compensated for spending their valuable time working with the students on a daily basis. We want to expose our students to opportunities and experiences that they may never have the chance to experience. Although we have many volunteers, running an organization of 150 students throughout the summer and an average of 120 throughout the school year does require money.
