Mission Statement

Friends of Gateway Green is a grassroots organization working to create a public recreation area on a piece of virtually unused, publicly owned property -- with a focus on off-road bicycling activities, walking/running, and exploring nature.

About This Cause

After years of grassroots support and partnerships with local, regional, and state government as well as the private and non-profit sectors, nearly 25 acres of virtually unused, neglected, publicly owned property has been transformed into Gateway Green, a multi-use park that enhances this vibrant part of the city. With the completion of Phase 1 construction (the off-road bicycle features), the park opened to the public in June, 2017 -- with an event that drew more than 1,000 people on a very hot day. Gateway Green will also have trails for dog walking, jogging, skating and more. It will also incorporate a nature exploration area, where kids can climb on logs and rocks, roll down a hill, and dig in the sand. There will also be considerable habitat restoration at the site which should attract a variety of birds and small animals. Phase 2 construction is tentatively scheduled to start in September 2018. A short video filmed at Gateway Green can be seen by visiting www.gatewaygreenpdx.org FRIENDS OF GATEWAY GREEN, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, was created to help turn this unused swath of land between two freeways in Portland, Oregon into a recreational area for off-road bicycle riding, hiking and more -- to do all this in a sustainable way -- and to partner with Portland Parks & Recreation to develop programming and volunteer activities once the park is developed.
