Mission Statement

Our foundation has established after school programs in public elementary schools in four rural villages in Bali; we have seven Balinese teachers that teach English, basic computer education, programs to foster reading for pleasure and to improve basic hygiene. We renovated buildings on each site using local villagers to provide a clean and stimulating environment (referred to as Learning Centers). The programs are funded by our Foundation and are free to the children. Currently we have over 300 children attending the after school programs every week.

About This Cause

Our program differs greatly from the children's compulsory program in the mornings where the emphasis is on rote learning. We provide a fun learning environment and use music and games to teach the children. The children love to come to the classes and sometimes will bring brothers and sisters. Our libraries in each leaning center have over 200 books and many are in English, Indonesian and Balinese. We encourage the children to take the books home to read to their family and many times will have them write basic book reports. We oversee the programs ourselves and visit Bali three times a year to make sure the programs are meeting the needs of the children in each village. In addition to the above programs we have started identifying girls in our classes that are deserving of advanced education; many girls have to drop out of school at the end of the 9th grade (the government requires that they finish the 9th grade) to go to work to support their families. To finish high school, 10th through 12th grade, requires that the parents pay for the additional schooling. We have ten young women now in our program. Our plan is to add many others to the program in the near future.
