Mission Statement
Creative Aging enhances seniors' quality of lifeby stimulating their minds, creativity and sense of self through place-based arts programs that engage, educate and entertain.
About This Cause
Creative Aging is a nimble, intermediary organization that advocates in a wide range of senior communities-most having limited interest and/or capacity to support arts programming-for the importance of arts engagement. To ensure that the arts reach seniors where they are, Creative Aging vets artists; publicizes artists online (so communities can choose events according to their interests); schedules, markets, and evaluates events; and pays artists. Creative Aging creates partnerships with established community arts organizations to leverage their work for the benefit of seniors, then removes barriers to access by presenting performances during the day, at accessible community locations, for only $5. We develop lifelong learning courses that give seniors a chance to learn, build friendships, and increase confidence. Courses take place in libraries and senior centers close to seniors’ homes. Creative Aging's audience members are residents/participants at highly diverse nursing homes, adult day care centers, senior centers, assisted and independent living communities. Creative Aging also engages seniors “aging in place” at home. Many participants have multiple disabilities; live on fixed income; and are deeply isolated due to fragile physical, emotional, or financial conditions. Extensive research shows that arts engagement positively impacts seniors by improving their cognitive vitality, health, and sense of self. The arts offer opportunities to learn and to create; new friendships and a sense of purpose; a bridge to the community and decreased feelings of isolation. In addition to providing seniors with arts access, Creative Aging's programs provide critical support to the community’s arts economy by offering more than 100 professional artists flexible, well-paid, meaningful work opportunities.
