Mission Statement
The Frances Xavier Warde School is a Catholic elementary school in downtown Chicago that provides an academically excellent, values-oriented education to students of all ethnic, religious, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in a child-centered urban environment. As a keystone of its diverse community, The School provides need-based scholarships to 30 percent of its students, partners with its families, nurtures faith development for its Catholic students, and engages all students to learn about and respect other faith traditions. FXW follows a rigorous curriculum that enables students to grow, clarify their values, and develop decision-making skills and a sense of responsibility for themselves and the world they will inherit.
About This Cause
The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW) is an Independent, Catholic, grade school located in the heart of Chicago, with a lower school on the campus of Old St. Patrick’s Church and the upper school located on the campus of Holy Name Cathedral. FXW serves close to 800 students from preschool through eighth grade. It was founded in 1989 by then, City of Chicago First Lady, Maggie Daley and Fr. Jack Wall, pastor of Old St. Patrick Church, with the vision of providing a school that would not only offer academic excellence but also emphasize moral development, community involvement, and diversity. From its inception, FXW aimed to welcome students from a broad range of backgrounds, creating a vibrant and inclusive educational environment rooted in the values of the Catholic faith that was representative of the rich diversity of the City of Chicago. Originally called Old St. Patrick’s School, it was renamed in 1997 to honor Mother Frances Xavier Warde, a 19th-century Sister of Mercy known for her pioneering work in Catholic education and service. As enrollment grew, FXW expanded in 1999 to a second campus with support from Holy Name Cathedral, forming the two-campus model that exists today. FXW’s academic program is known for its rigor and thoughtful design, tailored to each developmental stage. The school emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, and a love of learning while integrating spiritual and moral values across disciplines. Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of co-curricular and extracurricular activities that promote leadership, character, and community engagement. From music and art to service projects and athletics, FXW provides a well-rounded educational experience. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are not only foundational principles at FXW but also active commitments reflected in daily school life. The school fosters an environment where students of all races, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds feel seen, respected, and empowered. Its inclusive culture is supported by the school’s long-standing financial aid program, its culturally responsive teaching practices, and its emphasis on social-emotional learning. Students graduate from FXW not only academically prepared but also equipped with the empathy and resilience necessary to navigate an increasingly complex world. Beyond academics, FXW prioritizes strong support systems for students and families. The school maintains close collaboration among educators, specialists, counselors, and parents to ensure each student receives the guidance and resources they need to thrive. Whether addressing academic challenges, personal growth, or social development, the school is committed to nurturing the whole child. More than thirty years after its founding, FXW continues to stand as one of Chicago’s most respected elementary schools. It remains true to the founding vision of its leaders, delivering excellence in education while celebrating diversity and fostering a strong sense of purpose and community. Today, FXW graduates are recognized not only for their academic readiness but also for their character, compassion, and commitment to service—hallmarks of an education rooted in both tradition and forward-thinking values.
