About This Cause
History In 2009, Read Indeed was founded by Maria Keller, when she was eight years old. Maria’s goal included collecting and distributing 1,000,000 books to needy children by the time she’s 18. In June 2009 Read Indeed incorporated and obtained its 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service. Maria reached her 1 million book goal in October 2013. Read Indeed's vision is to “make the world a better place one book at a time.” Through book drives and ongoing collections of new and gently used children’s books, Read Indeed has been able to distribute those books to children all over the world. As of 2021, Read Indeed has collected and distributed more than 3.7 Million books to children in need. Read Indeed’s mission also includes communicating the importance of children’s literacy to parents and other adults. Current Programs, Service Statistics, Strengths/Accomplishments Read Indeed currently distributes new and gently used children’s books to organizations serving children in need. These books are intended to be given to the children for them to keep, thus many of the organizations that receive the books are crisis centers, food shelves, schools, hospitals, and other organizations serving children. Funding: The funding for Read Indeed is obtained through donations and grants. The funds collected are used to purchase brand new books for kids in need. Impact of Activities: We measure the effectiveness of Read Indeed’s activities gauging the number of books collected, the number of books distributed, and the number of organizations that have received books from Read Indeed. The children are the ultimate recipients of these books. To date approximately 1 million children have benefitted from Read Indeed's efforts and have received books from our organization.
