Mission Statement

CommonWealth Kitchen is a non-profit economic empowerment and small business development organization on a mission to build a just, equitable, resilient food economy where everyone can participate and prosper. To accomplish this mission, we work to break down the barriers to diverse low/moderate income people to launch and scale food businesses by empowering them with the resources, relationships and infrastructure required for success. Our core services include: 1) operation of a shared-use commercial kitchen in Dorchester that is home to 50+ diverse food companies- over 75% BIPOC-owned; 2) comprehensive food business education and technical training services that reach well over 250 start-up and established food businesses annually; 3) coordinated access to markets to help drive sales for our members; and 4) our own small-batch food manufacturing operation which provides outsourced processing to food and farm businesses, as well as our own line of products for institutional food service.

About This Cause

At CommonWealth Kitchen, food is our passion, equity is our mission. But, like many of our non profit peers, we find ourselves juggling big internal challenges and a growing need for our work. We need to grow our organizational infrastructure so that we can continue to create a more just and equitable food system. Help us meet our goal of raising $500,000 in funds by the end of the year! Your donation will allow us to push forward with groundbreaking new efforts around our regional food supply chain, food justice, climate resiliency, and community feeding! CommonWealth Kitchen has big plans for 2024 - and we need your help to make them happen! But first, here’s a look at some of the things we’ve done this year, with your support: *Small Businesses Feeding Refugees: Amidst the countless stories of refugee families arriving in Massachusetts, our member companies are feeding them and providing a taste of comfort to Massachusetts’ newest residents. The BBJ and Globe have highlighted these powerful partnerships. It’s no wonder that just a few weeks ago, one of our own– Nathalie Lecorps, owner of Gourmet Kreyol–Boston’s first Haitian food truck– was honored by the U.S. Haitian Chamber of Commerce with the Young Entrepreneur Award! *Gobble Gobble Goodness: This Thanksgiving, we helped assemble and send out meals to 300 families that Boston Community Pediatrics serves. CWK members Breez Gourmet and Sweet Teez Bakery, along with CWK alum Auntie Vie's prepared a whole turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, collard greens and an apple pie! Mayor Wu even stopped by and helped us load up 1000 turkeys to give to families across the City. *Climate Change-Fighting Field Pea Fritters: We're transforming a humble cover-crop - the yellow field pea - into a delicious fritter! This strengthens our regional chain, boosts climate resilience, generates farm revenue, and fosters job creation, supporting CWK's operations. Incubating Local Businesses: The 2023 CWK Food Show in October took the SoWa Power Station by storm, featuring 90+ diverse small food businesses. Plus,! wWe’re offering a $10k Partnership Prize in collaboration with MassDevelopment to support a buyer and vendor contract that came out of the food show. *Dishing Up Equity : Catering is big business, and we’re making sure CWK businesses get their piece of the pie. This year alone we’ve locked in: - Commitments for $100K in purchases from Gourmet Caterers next year. - A $28K contract for Clarke’s Cakes & Cookies– a woman- and family-owned vegan baking business– to make carrot cake for MIT’s graduation. - Three-year preferred caterer status for 8 CWK members at MIT. - CWK members caterers/vendors featured at Harvard Medical School, the NAACP national convention, Boston Gospel Fest, and more!
