Mission Statement
The Withers Collection Museum and Gallery is the face of the Withers Collection. Our mission is to educate about and preserve the works of Dr. Ernest C. Withers, Sr., renowned photo-journalist. The Collection is being cataloged, organized, and is in the Description and Identification Phase of the preservation. Donations, Award and Grants to the Withers Collection assist us with the digitalization of over 1.8 million images and negatives in the Withers Archive. The majority of the images are printed on fiber-based silver gelatin from the negatives have never been printed with Fine Art standards and contain a vast visual profile of Fine Art images of life in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, in the South. Our goal is to create a digital archive of the Withers Collection, and to complete Description Finding Aides, in each category (Civil Rights, Sports, Music, Politics and Lifestyles) that will be available for to the public as a historical resource.
About This Cause
The Withers Collection Museum and Gallery is located on historic Beale Street in Memphis, TN, in the heart of downtown. The street sees visitors from all over the world, many of whom make their way to the Museum. We often get stories of how we were "found" in the midst of Beale Street night life. In 2017, the racial makeup of the Shelby County was: 52.10% African American 40.60% Caucasian 5.60% Hispanic or Latino of any race 2.30% Asian The majority of the visitors to the Museum are travelers outside of our demographic area, who have some interest in history and are aware of the Withers Collection. On average, the Museum receives 1,000+ visitors per month during the peak season. With the hiring of a Social Media Consultant, we have increased our presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Yelp, Trip Advisor) with positive reviews posted online about their museum experience. The WCM&G Marketing team will utilize social media (Instagram, Facebook and twitter) to promote and educate our audiences about upcoming events, exhibitions and programs related to the expansive Withers Collection. The Never Seen Before Images in the Withers Archive are a resource to researchers, filmmakers, authors and the general public interested in knowing more about our history.
