SISTERS OF OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE MARY MOTHER OF LIFE USA DELEGATION

Annandale, Virginia, 22003 United States

Mission Statement

Attentive to the promptings of the Spirit, we the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette have chosen to live as a faithful community bonded by the La Salette charism in the rhythm of the ministry of reconciliation. "We, Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette are called to be disciple missionaries of reconciliation in the heart of the world." The spirit of Reconciliation, we the Sisters discern it in the gestures and words of Mary in her apparition is expressed by a life of prayer, sacrifice and apostolate or ministries. Our prayer is joined with that of Mary, who in heaven, through her constant intercession, never ceases to obtain for "Her People" the grace of salvation. A prayerful life, interceding in the name of our wounded and suffering humanity. Like St. Paul, "always in prayer for those to whom he has sent" (Phil. 1:4) Our sacrifice is realized in our self-offering to God, renewed each moment through our acceptance of the Father's will, which leads us, along with Mary, to share in the redemptive life of Christ and His sacrifice on the Cross. A Life offered and given, a sacrifice united to that of Christ who goes to the end of love. "It is love that pleases me, not sacrifice" (Hosea 6:6). Our Apostolate or Ministries is marked by the very love that makes the Blessed Virgin Mary attentive to the needs of her children. This love fills our hearts with an active concern for the poor, the underprivileged and all who are in distress. By our whole life, we the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette want to be a witnesses to Christ's call to Reconciliation and conversion. A missionary life, full of love for the People of God, full of zeal for the coming of the new reconciled Humanity. "Of what was divided, he made a unity" (Ephesians 2:14) In different stages of our history, different spiritual accents have been privileged: they give a specific color to our life and mission: Humility: to follow the path of Christ the servant; Simplicity: to live in truth before God and before others; Trust: rely on God and others. Following Mary's example in her apparition at La Salette, a welcoming attitude and availability mark our daily lives. We are uniquely blessed with a founding event-the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at La Salette, France on September 19, 1846. Mary's compassionate presence at La Salette; her tears, words, gestures, symbols and the social context serve as a striking illustration and an urgent reminder of God's merciful love and compassion for His people and creation. She affirms that God is intimately present at the heart of our lives... in conversion with us. She weeps because we "her people have so much need for conversion and she remains hopeful that we will return to the Source of Life, the God of infinite tenderness. The grace of La Salette sensitizes the Sisters to the call of Christ, who came to announce the Good News to the poor. The Sisters want to pass on the call to conversion launched by Mary on her Apparition for the sake of "her people": "If they are converted" and to respond to Her request:"Well, my children, make it known to all My people." That is why, the apostolate and ministry is essential to the vocation of the Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette. =The Sisters live in intimate union with God, knowing how to integrate contemplation with action. =The witness of the Sisters' consecrated life , their evangelical community life, the prayer and sacrifice which give concrete expression to their spirituality as Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette must be the first and most important dimension of their apostolate or ministry in the Church and in today's world. In the spirit of Reconciliation, which is the grace of La Salette, the Sisters engage in every form of apostolate and ministries that is apt to promote the development of the human person through respect for his dignity and liberty. In the milieus where they are sent, they strive to build peace and unity through justice and charity. Through the meditation of the gestures and words of Mary in her Apparition, and in the light of the spiritual, theological and pastoral writings recognized by the Church, we commit ourselves to live in the spirit of reconciliation.

About This Cause

Our mission in the Church and the world. Our mission takes place in communities we are sent to live among the People of God. In education, health, social action, pastoral care, parishes, sanctuaries/shrines or any other activity related to our charism, this mission commits us to liberate, reconcile, awaken, connect and to lead to more dignity and life. Our contemporary contexts, too often marked by violence, exclusion, broken relationships, a more difficult way of living together, are particularly appealing to live out our charism. Whatever our specific mission and commitments are, whatever the country and the place may be, we give priority to the poor and oppressed, to those who are rejected, excluded, and isolated. Whatever our age or state of health may be, we are all involved in this mission of our Congregation. Our call to conversion and forgiveness: In order to be apostles moved by the desire for communion and unity, we need to hear, in a particularly strong way, the message of La Salette: a call to conversion and forgiveness. We cannot be missionaries without allowing ourselves to be converted to the Gospel and without asking God and our sisters and brothers for forgiveness that liberates and relieves. We live this charism of reconciliation in an international Congregation that is marked by interculturality. As Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette (SNDS) , we are conscious of being called to witness both reconciliation and evangelical fraternity: i.e. to show that it is possible to call one another Sisters in the difference of cultures and histories. "Make it known to all my people." Mary tells us again. As SNDS, we are called to make accessible to all the mercy of the Father, to promote, to support what contributes in building peace, communion, reconciliation. Marked by the realities of this world that too often divide and destroy relationships, we share the suffering, struggles, the hopes of our brothers and sisters. We receive our mission from our Congregation which sends us, in the name of the Church, to live that mission in community. This witness of fraternal life is our first mission: "This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." ( John 13:35) Humbly and freely, we give our lives. Proximity and simplicity are important marks of this common mission. Our lifestyle wants to be similar to the one which is proper to simple people. Whether our mission is realized in education, health, social work, pastoral or parish commitment or any other activity, we try to give life to the charism of our Institute. Where we are, we work to reconcile people, to develop what allows solidarity between generations and cultures, to fight everything that divides and reject differences. We are particularly attentive to those who experience tensions and conflicts. In our commitments, we join those who want to take care of the planet and creation and work so that everyone can benefit, with justice, "the fruits of the earth and the work of mankind". Mission in the Shrines: In many countries and dioceses, our mission takes on the face of a presence and service in shrines and sites of pilgrimages. This is another way of honoring our Institute and its birth from the La Salette event". Justice and peace: As members of an international congregation, we are particularly affected by the conflicts and situations of injustice suffered by certain countries and continents. We live our prophetic mission in solidarity with other religions, ecumenical and interfaith groups, as well as secular organizations. We, thus, contribute collectively to the work or reconciliation by being peacemakers and by building a more just and humane world. Our humble contribution: This mission is bigger than us, but we are sure that small gestures, small achievements are seeds of hope that can open new paths. This mission is special call to live in peace and harmony: reconciled with God, with ourselves, with others, and with creation. Listening to the events: Because of the nature of our mission, we are called to listen to life, the events of the world and the Church, the various social and cultural realities, and the life of our Christian communities. Our mission calls us to think and collaborate with others. It also calls us to turn to God in prayer, to meditate on His Word, to let ourselves be imbued with Mary's gestures and words, especially those that are related to La Salette. In every situation, we are all missionaries. Sharing the joy of participating in the proclamation of the Gospel, we want our lives to be marked by availability and daring. Elderly or sick, we all share the mission of our Congregation by offering our life and through our prayer. All of us, we surrender ourselves, with trust, to the mercy of God. As a response to the call and invitation of Mary at La Salette to make her message of known to all her children, her people of God's merciful love through our conversion and reconciliation; we are sent to the different countries... Algeria, Angola, Brazil, Canada, Italy, France, Madagascar, Myanmar [Burma], Poland, Philippines and United States of America; Our Missions and ministries are: Shrine services, Facilitating recollection, retreats and Day of Prayer to the youth and adults, Accompanying women and girls in Crisis, School administration and education, Hospital and prison ministry, Religious Education and Catechesis, Youth Ministry Handicapped & Drug Rehabilitation Centers, Teaching women with basic hygiene and alternative medicine, Serving the Homeless and journeying with people in small Christian communities and with the La Salette Lay mission partners and associates. In their action in favor of the poor and oppressed, the Sisters commit themselves to joyfully serve the entire People of God with love, care and selflessness. Builders of peace and reconciliation, they are vigilant in promoting, with due respect for differences, mutual acceptance ad understanding among those they serve.
