Lac Hong Vietnamese Language School is a non-profit organization. The school was established on September 9, 2004 by a group of parent volunteers. All faculties, officers, and Directors are 100% volunteers.

About This Cause

In 2004, Lac Hong Vietnamese Language School started from one teacher and 15 students gathered every Sunday at the local library to learn how to spell and read Vietnamese. Three years later, from 2005 - 2007, we exhausted our local library facility by having 60 students with three different levels and 4 teachers. From 2008 - 2011, we had 7 - 10 teachers and 90 students at 6 different levels from kindergarten to grade 5. Within this period, we moved to Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, WA, where we had the privilege of using 6 conference rooms for free. In 2012, we rent 8 classrooms from Voyager Middle School, Mukilteo School District, with 7 grade levels, from kindergarten to grade 6, with about 100 students. As of current date, we have 150 students enroll with demand for more students in the future. Teaching the Vietnamese language, culture, and history each Sunday (1:30 - 4:00 pm), excludes the holidays, following the local school district calendar, teachers are volunteer parents who either have teaching experience or have performed volunteer work at the local school district. There has been and will continue to be no problem of compensation as the school is staffed 100% by volunteers. Depends on grade level, each grade level consists of either 16 or 32 lessons, 2.5 hours each lesson, for reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. 20% of class time also consists of teaching of cultural singing, dancing, and drama lessons. Students receive 15 minutes of recess within the building with supervision of the faculty/volunteer parents. School activities consist of Tet Celebration (Vietnamese New Year) and End of School Year Celebration with the community at large. Preparation for this day, teachers and students practiced for numerous weeks in order to sing, dance, and act out a skit from part of the cultural history in front of the 400+ audiences. Within the 4 hours allotted time of this celebration, we included gift giving to the students for their early accomplishments and encourage them to stay in school. Students and staff members wear cultural clothing to reinforce Vietnamese culture and values. In addition, students also participated in Tet in Seattle annually to compete in spelling bee /knowledge bowl and to present cultural music and dance skills. Students have participated in food drive event to collect food for their local community. Since 2012, an annual fundraising event also occurred with participation from parents, teachers, students, local volunteers, and local businesses to raise money to pay for the program, cultural activities, and facility rental cost. Students and their parents develop responsibilities through volunteering tasks in organizing the occasion. As members of the school, students bring attention to themselves, their school, parents, and community. website: http://truonglachong.org
