Mission Statement

Four Horseman Investments is dedicated to financial literacy and education. We work to prove that finance and philanthropy are not mutually exclusive. Our student-run organization engages our mission through EXPERIENCE, RESEARCH, and OUTREACH. We run a student-managed fund that invests solely in peer-to-peer loans, providing our members with unique experience. We conduct academic research dedicated to creating an alternative to debt traps like payday loans. Finally, we engage our community by providing education in financial literacy.

About This Cause

Four Horseman Investments (4HI) is a not-for-profit investment company run by college students. Our primary mission is to educate the next generation of investment professionals, who will demonstrate through their actions that finance and philanthropy are not mutually exclusive. We engage with our educational mission through experience, research, and outreach: EXPERIENCE: Members of 4HI gain practical investment experience by running a student-managed fund focused on peer-to-peer (P2P) loans—a fund we believe to be the only one of its kind in the world. Members screen all borrowers and choose all loans based on criteria they establish. Returns on the fund to date exceed 7%. RESEARCH: Members design, execute, and present research related to 4HI and microfinance. Since our creation in 2009, we have presented papers at academic conferences around the U.S., and in San Jose, Costa Rica; Cambridge, England; and Barcelona, Spain. To date, we have published four papers (in the journals Business Education and Accreditation (2009), International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (2010), Accounting and Taxation (2012), and The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Education Studies (2013)). We are currently focusing our research on underserved populations such as students and the unbanked; we hope that our work will help expand opportunities for them to access basic banking services. OUTREACH: Members engage in outreach activities related to our mission. We sponsor financial literacy programs, work as tax preparation volunteers, and sponsor textbook scholarships. We currently are working to develop a platform for student-to-student microlending. 4HI offers students a unique opportunity to run a debt portfolio, conduct meaningful research, and help the community. We believe that basic financial services are necessary to reach financial security, and that they therefore should be viewed as a utility. We are working to ensure access to that utility, and to the power of financial freedom.
