Mission Statement

'...keeping the soul of San Francisco alive.'—San Francisco Chronicle Litquake, the largest independent literary festival on the West Coast, aims to increase community engagement, intellectual stimulation, and aesthetic enrichment for book lovers in the greater Bay Area through free and low-cost events. With two decades of captivating, culturally enriching events, Litquake continues to foster an ever-growing community where readers and writers from all walks of life can connect and be inspired.

About This Cause

Litquake has an array of programs, the vast majority of which are free, with a focus on bringing people together around writing, storytelling, and reading. Each year, the two-week-plus Litquake Festival brings tens of thousands of attendees together with hundreds of local and visiting writers for educational seminars, workshops, discussions, and presentations. Programs specific to K-5 students, the elderly, and local BIPOC authors and arts groups help make cultural events accessible to all and foster diverse artist communities which is crucial to maintaining the Bay Area’s cultural soul and arts scene. It connects us, it nourishes us—everyone deserves literature. Founded in 1999, in its 22 years, Litquake has hosted 10,600 author appearances for 280,000 attendees.
