IF PIGS COULD FLY - HELPING HILLSIDE HAITI

Palo Alto, California, 94306 United States

Mission Statement

Our small Haitian and American collaborative non-profit continues to support small-scale work projects (solar power pumping of water; livestock scholarships for you; a modest school feeding program)) in a remote mountain community above the plain of Leogane. If Pigs Could fly - Haiti! is not, was not and is not, about miracles or flying pigs. It was a young girl's wish, when she first learned of the debacle of the Kreyol pig - or the alleged debacle of the Creole pig - depending on how left your leanings. Mariejo wanted to replace the decimated pigs, and worked to convince her school to save coins in piggy banks, strategically placed in each classroom. As a French-American, Marie Josee was unfamiliar with the skepticism of the English idiom, "When pigs fly..." So, she named her project, “If Pigs Could Fly, We would send them to Haiti.” A bit long for a non-profit! We later abbreviated it. So, this wasn't an attempt to be snide about what it would take to resurrect the Haitian countryside from erosion. It wasn't an attempt to joke about what it would take to educate, make education available, to poor, rural, remote communities. It wasn't sarcasm about what it would take for the 70% of literacy to decline, among Haitian adults, throughout Haiti. It wasn't hinting of miracles or acts of deity. It was just a wish, on the part of one child, that she and her classmates could make a world of difference to the part of the world she loved and called, "My Mountain." "Not because, " she wrote, "Not because the mountain belongs to me, but because I belong on the mountain." We marshal up sharing of world resources to support small-scale work projects in rural Haiti, including access to water and school feeding programs, which employ mountain residences to prepare snacks, breakfasts for schools in the zone.

About This Cause

Since 2001, If Pigs Could Fly-Haiti COLLABORATES, SHOULDER TO SHOULDER, with farmers, teachers and their families in the mountains of southeastern Haiti, above the plain of Leogane, Mountain families are scattered along a footpath upwards of 3500 feet; recently, our organization collaborated with schools and churches to facilitate the building of a road! Our team collaborated to design and implement a solar powered system for pumping water closer to settled areas and provided paid work for the local resident team. We provide paid work, not charity, for projects that address local needs voiced by residents. We are a collaborative effort, first and foremost, Heads (and Hearts) together.
