About This Cause
Groundswell International is a global network of grassroots NGOs that are pioneering the spread of ecological farming practices known as agroecology. We work with local partner organizations in 11 countries tocatalyze the urgently needed transition from conventional, unsustainable agriculture and rural development models tosustainable, ecological farming strategies. Our network is active inBurkina Faso, Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Mali, Mexico, Nepal, and Senegal. Agrocologycan increase food production, regenerate degraded land, improve local incomes and economies, strengthen women’s wellbeing, and build resilience to climate change. Unfortunately, these effective strategies continue to be ignored or undermined by many governments and development agencies and trends point to continued growth and promotion of agricultural models based on high-chemical inputs and mono-cropping on the production side, and a growing dependence on processed-food on the consumption side. This undermines local ecosystems and economies, contributes to the exodus of young people from rural areas, and erodes family farmers’ capacity to sustain local food systems. Groundswell seeks to reverse these trends and stimulate local economic development among the poorest, rural sectors; regenerate and sustainably manage natural resources; empower women; and create incentives for young people to invest in their futures in rural communities.
