Mission Statement
Good Karma Bikes (GKB) is a dynamic, innovative nonprofit social enterprise in San Jose, CA. We are a full-service, second-hand bike shop reinvesting our sales proceeds into the community. Our flagship program is working with disconnected youth in the community. Our disruptive program paradigm provides these youth with self-sufficiency: (1) they work in our bike shop, (2) they must attend college, and (3) they must do community service. All with the Good Karma safety net slowly pulled back over the course of two years. Our program creates business-indoctrinated, college-educated philanthropic contributors. We also operate a full-service, free, no questions asked bike repair clinic each Saturday rain or shine. We serve 3,000 people in need every year.
About This Cause
Working with aged-out foster youth and other disconnected youth and serving 3,000 clients each year with repairs, service, parts and granted bicycles, Good Karma Bikes is not about bicycles. It is about social impact, community service, self-esteem building, and human uplift. We are scaling our youth program to engage 100 young people by 2021. Your donation supports: **Support former foster and other disconnected youth with: work experience, college education, and philanthropic service to the community. **No-cost bicycle repair clinics for any client, both at the GKB shop and various partner facilities. **Bicycle Mechanics 12-week Training Program scholarship for those who cannot pay. Successful completion results in a locally recognized certification. **No-cost rehabilitated bicycle “grantings” to safety-net clients. **A Work-For-A-Bike program where clients work six hours and are paid with a rehabilitated bicycle. **Youth Holiday bicycle granting in partnership with Sacred Heart Community Services. **Good Karma Kids Clinics and children’s bicycle granting. **Connections to safety net services like supportive housing, refugee resettlement, and winter coats. The "pay it forward" spirit is strong at Good Karma. Many clients return each week to work as volunteers learning bicycle repair and helping others. There are some homeless volunteers who have acquired enough experience in certain skills to teach others basic bicycle mechanics. For clients, this is a terrific self-esteem boost, as well as an avenue to future employment and increased self-sufficiency. All the while working in community service with our program youth. Since January 2010, GKB has serviced more than 18,000 clients and granted 1,500 bicycles through the efforts of over 1,000 volunteers donating more than 50,000 hours. We have effected over 100,000 bicycle repairs. Our 7,000 square foot, full-service second-hand bike shop is a community center bringing together clients, volunteers and customers. Come see for yourself!
