Mission Statement
ASIO (Association of Seniors of Indian Origin)'s mission is " to build a thriving, strong and supportive community for seniors of Indian origin by staying engaged, connected and informed".
About This Cause
In 2016 several leaders within the Indian diaspora came together to support seniors who were experiencing isolation due to mobility, language and financial challenges leading to depression and many other health challenges. In 2021, ASIO was born and formalized as a 100% volunteer led 501c3. In 2023, nearly 500 people, speaking 10 different languages, have participated in various activities offered by ASIO. The three current programs include: 1) Hiking and Outdoor group, conducts weekly nature walks and 4 annual multi-generational picnics that includes food and transportation. 2) Book Reading and Discussion group, includes reading new books quarterly with a monthly discussion session, and the 3) Community Involvement Group that focuses on Physical, Mental Fitness and Financial Education. This group encourages social interactions through weekly meetings, and creative projects such as producing and acting in plays, Bingo, Yoga, healthy snack competitions. Discussion on retirement savings and other participant-led projects. With 22 official languages of India, ASIO represents at least 10 different linguistic communities. This has fostered a sense of unity and brought different foods, skills, traditions and knowledge together. Attendees are enjoying ASIO events and learning from each other. As an example, the recent play that was written produced and acted, involved 6 different regional cultures, brought together in India’s national language, Hindi. Actors came together with their own accents and learnt new words and meanings as a group.
