Mission Statement
Grace Academy is far more than a school. Through our educational, cultural, social, spiritual and athletic programs, with extended-day, -week and -year, Grace Academy promotes the growth of the whole person. The Grace Academy student is taught not only to believe in her own self-worth, but also to understand her responsibility to serve others. Grace Academy exists first and foremost to provide an exceptional educational opportunity to girls from families of limited economic means. In a structured learning environment – including an extended school day, individual tutoring, and small classes – our students develop the character, skills and discipline needed to become productive citizens. We are committed to the success of our students not only in middle school, but – with guidance, tutoring, and financial support – in high school and college. Our hope is that Grace Academy graduates will enjoy successful, productive careers and make significant contributions to their communities.
About This Cause
Grace Academy – Hartford’s first and only tuition-free, middle school for underserved girls in grades 5-8 - was founded in 2010 and adheres to the NativityMiguel model of education and its mission to break the cycle of urban poverty through education. Grace Academy intercedes in the lives of urban girls (who qualify for the Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program) at the fifth grade and then prepares them for high school and college. Our mission is to break the cycle of urban poverty through education by transforming the lives of girls in Hartford. The success of our model can be attributed to a multiple of factors: • An extended-day and -week program (7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Saturday field trips) • Intentionally small school; 15 students per class with an 6:1 student/faculty ratio • High expectations delivered in a caring, nurturing community • Intensive academics • Strong culture of community grounded in spiritual formation • Parent(s)/guardian(s) involvement • Community involvement with collaborative alliances • Mandatory summer school with continued instruction and character development • Post-graduate support through high school and into college In an effort to help augment and enhance the academic experience being provided to students, Grace Academy has developed partnerships with local businesses, the non-profit community, as well as volunteers who enhance the quality of our program to provide tutoring, counseling and guidance to each student.
