About This Cause
Established in 2000, A-Sharp Chorus is one of the largest Chinese chorus groups in the San Francisco Bay Area, with over 70 regular singers. Mostly from Mainland China, they are business or technical professionals, many of whom have masters or doctoral degrees. They are passionate for music and chorus singing. They work full time during weekdays and meet for practices on weekends. From works with various instrumental accompaniments to large scale masterpieces with full orchestra, A-Sharp has steadily developed itself into one of the beloved choirs in the Bay Area. It has not only contributed to the local community but also enjoyed international exposure at the same time. In the passed ten years, A-Sharp Chorus participated in or produced a number of high-profile concerts. In 2007, A-Sharp Chorus took the Cantata “Lyrics of Overseas Chinese” by Mr. Guo Ke, the Chorus resident poet and a Chorus member, and Mr. A Tang, the composer, to China and performed at five venues. It told a story of 150 years by overseas Chinese who had struggled through hardships for their achievements and contributions to this country. It also expressed their yearning to the motherland through the melodies and lyrics. The Chorus received well wishes and compliments from the audiences, mass media local and central Chinese governments. In April 2009, A-Sharp Chorus and members from other two Choruses presented another masterpiece, the Oratorio “King Yu” by Mr. Guo Ke and Mr. Bao Yuankai, a well-known music composer. It was based on a legend that King Yu led his people and fought devastating floods for 13 years, and it exemplified the significance of a unified people and nation to survive and thrive. The Chorus traveled to four cities in China and Taiwan. They collaborated with China Central Opera House Chorus and other local artists, and held four concerts in two weeks. It was immensely successful. The events were widely covered by the mass media, and the work won positive appraisals from peers and experts on both sides of the Strait. In December 2011, A-Sharp Chorus and members from other Choruses presented another masterpiece, the Oratorio “Song of the Big Wind” by Mr. Guo Ke and Prof. Chen,Lechang, a well-known music composer. The plot of “Song of the Big Wind” is about Emperor Han Gao Zu (256 BC – 195 BC) who reunified China and created the first golden age in Chinese history. It was great success to work with over 70 American musicians’s from Symphony of Silicon Valley.
