Mission Statement
To Empower women survivors of violence, incarceration, homelessness, and addiction to Heal from Trauma, Transform their lives, and Achieve their dreams.
About This Cause
Since 2009 we have provided housing, counseling, healing & empowerment groups, case-management, advocacy, and family reunification services for hundreds of women who have experienced childhood molestation, gender-based violence, incarceration, homelessness, and addiction. We know that so often there is intersectionality in all these areas, which largely result from deep childhood trauma. Over 74% of women who have completed our Serenity House Recovery Program have gone on to lead fulfilling and successful lives! They have found housing and employment, they have remained clean and sober, they have re-gained custody of their children, and repaired relationships with loved ones. Over 90% of the women we serve are African American. We are Survivor-led, 70% of our team are former Sister to Sister 2/Serenity House Clients, who have lived experience and who serve as role models for other women! Each night on the streets of Oakland there are thousands of people with no place to call home, trying to survive. Approximately 40% are women. Women and children are sleeping in cars! Unsheltered women are extremely vulnerable to assault, robbery, and trafficking. In 2022 we opened our new "Sisters House" provides a beautiful home environment for women (including moms with children) who are working, preparing to enter the workforce or attending school/ vocational training programs. Domestic Violence is at an all time high, and we receive more calls each month. We provide resources for women experiencing domestic violence, including case-management, support/empowerment groups, counseling, (and short-term emergency hotel rooms dependent upon funding). Over 80% of the women in this program have been placed into stable, safe housing, and have not returned to their abusers. We also offer a 16-week workforce development course for women - "Serenity Wellness & Business", which blends healing and wellness activities with learning business and entrepreneurship skills. Since launching this in June 2022, we have had over 30 women successfully complete the course and graduate, and over half have started their own businesses! As a result of COVID-19 so many individuals and families in our community are experiencing food insecurity and hunger, in particular the homeless. Through our Sharing is Caring Community Outreach, we are distributing hundreds of hot meals to our community each week (in partnership with Community Kitchens), along with clothing, blankets, coats, children's clothing, and hygiene kits.
