HealthStart Builds Healthier Communities Through Children's Health and Science Education
About This Cause
HealthStart teaches children the science behind healthy habits to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities. We do this by working with childcare centers, elementary schools, health care clinics, and community partners so children can establish good health habits early in life. Roughly one-third of Texas children are overweight or obese, leading to significant health problems later in life. Like brain development, our food and fitness preferences are formed by age 6, which makes the link between our childhood and adult health strong. It’s also easier to learn a good habit than break a bad one! As a result of HealthStart’s programs, we empower our students to become health “change agents,” sharing what they learn with their families and influencing the community by changing how we eat, move, and live together.
