Mission Statement

The Kefa Project (Play For Hope) runs soccer and basketball teams and a soccer academy in Rwanda to transform the lives of vulnerable youth. Each team is run by a locally trained Rwandan coach who has been extensively mentored by Play For Hope to start teams where he lives. We work with street children, orphans, prostitutes, and neighborhood children. It is our goal that all children and youth in our program discover their passions and talents and create a vision for their lives. Currently we run teams at 12 sites in the capital city of Rwanda.

About This Cause

We train local Rwandans extensively in all areas of coaching, sports management, and child psychology to work in the five following areas: 1. Training Centers: We run 12 sports training centers throughout Kigali, Rwanda. Each training center has 2-5 soccer or basketball teams lead by a trained coach. Teams are made up of vulnerable children, such as street children, prostitutes, and orphans with neighborhood children with the hope of creating reconciliation between the groups. Teams can be either male or female teams and have athletes from the age of 8 to 21. Our goal for every athlete is that he will discover his passions and dreams and be transformed by them. In addition to providing professional level coaching at each site, we teach our athletes life skills, mentorship, and help them to prepare for their future. By the end of 2013, it is our goal for every training center to have its own income producing project that the athletes will be able to use to meet the specific needs that they have in their communities. 2. The Kefa Academy: We run a soccer academy for 19 boys, 14 of whom were homeless, where the athletes live, train, and are educated to become the future heroes of Rwanda. We have two highly qualified coaches living at the academy, who help our athletes develop in all areas of life. At the academy all needs of the boys, including food, clothing, and medical, are met so that they can focus on developing their future. Many have gone from having no vision other than finding drugs for the day to have a vision of how they can transform Rwanda. 3. Female Empowerment: We are working to pioneer female sports in Rwanda, while empowering our female athletes through trainings on women's rights, fighting against violence towards females, and female health. Our females face many obstacles with little support to play the sports that they love. We are training our older females to be leaders of sports development in their communities. We are here to stand with them. 4. Professional Development: We strive for all of our programs to be run at a professional level so that our athletes can become professionals once they leave our programs. For some this means professional athletes, for others this means a career in a different field. We are currently working to develop businesses in Rwanda so that all of our athletes can have opportunities once they finish our programs to no longer live in poverty.
