Mission Statement

Elevate Oregon builds relationships with youth to promote education, self-reliance and achievement in the Parkrose School District. Through long-term, culturally responsive instruction and mentoring support, we empower young people toward success and leadership, with the goal that they become a strong positive influence in the community.

About This Cause

Elevate Oregon was founded in 2010 as a principled, community response to identified inequities and disparities in access, opportunities, and outcomes for vulnerable youth, both in school and during out-of-school times. It is the only program in the Portland metro area supporting at-risk youth that is embedded within the curriculum of the school district. To achieve our mission, our goals are to: • Work with students enrolled in Elevate Oregon to define and pursue success in a way that is personally meaningful to them • Empower young people • Help students develop supportive peer networks • Offer leadership opportunities to hone skills built-in, and out of, the classroom Elevate Oregon’s full-time TeacherMentors teach accredited elective classes to 96% youth of color in grades 3-12. These daily classes in the Parkrose School District incorporate 13 vital character qualities and life skills into our daily classroom curriculum through experiential learning, group activities and discussions. Together we develop the personal character, leadership qualities, and capabilities needed for success. The personal relationships our Teacher/Mentors have with their students are often the first consistent, positive adult relationship they have experienced. In school, Teacher/Mentors establish the foundation for meaningful, long-term relationships through daily interaction. Out of school—after school, on the weekends, and during the summer—is designed to reinforce the core values taught in the classroom. Over the last 6 years, in a school district with a 77.5% graduation rate, 95% of enrolled Elevate seniors have graduated from high school. The Need Elevate Oregon works with public school staff to identify the students who are most at-risk of dropping out. Over 90% of the students in our program are low income and 93% come from communities of color. The Parkrose School District has the highest percentage of African American students in Oregon, and the seventh most diverse student population in the state.
