Mission Statement

Engine’s mission is to connect and inspire our community through art, design, and education. Engine envisions a community and economy in which art, design, and education are valued, integrated, and celebrated. We believe that commerce follows culture, art should integrate, not alienate, and that art, in its fullest expression, not only impacts individuals but transforms communities.

About This Cause

Based on Main Street in a revitalizing Biddeford, Engine is a multi-faceted arts and educational non-profit organization. Founded in 2010, Engine sprang from the idea that arts are essential to economic and community development. Since its founding, the organization has sparked a new vitality in Biddeford’s downtown through its exhibitions, events, and education programs. Creating space for creativity benefits Biddeford by supporting a diverse, culturally-rich, and connected community. All fee-based programs are offered on a sliding scale, and our free community events are open to the public. Our long-standing collaboration with community-based, municipal, non-profit, and for-profit stakeholders has made Engine the arts and innovation leader in York County. Engine applies human-centered design thinking to approach our shared challenges and uplift diverse voices in everything we do.

Since Engine’s founding, it has been a catalyst for the region’s creative economy efforts. The organization is a driving force behind Biddeford’s Cultural Coalition and Public Art Committee, and is a key participant in NEFA’s regional Creative Economy Network. The organization also supports the redevelopment of property in downtown Biddeford for arts and cultural uses in collaboration with the Marble Block Redevelopment Corporation.
