Mission Statement

Thank you for your interest in supporting AYCO! Since our inception in 2009, African Youth Community Organization (“AYCO”)’s works to empower immigrant and refugees from African and other diaspora countries. AYCO’s mission statement, “To forget the past, engage the present and hope for the future”, serves as the primary value from which AYCO assists new refugees and immigrants to thrive in their new homeland. AYCO does so by building from within the immigrant and refugee community to develop community members into leaders and advocates in Oregon. As one of our refugees shared, without AYCO’s support to teach children, adults and families how to navigate their new cultural home in order to reduce isolation and build confidence in reaching out to the broader Portland-area and state-wide community, life in Oregon can “feel like watching sports from the sidelines but never feeling welcome to join in the game.”
